Product Description

Details

The Bards Dry beer kit range is made from spray dried malt extract. The spray drying process avoids the high heat that is used in normal malt extract production and when used with our own expecially developed hop mix it produces an extremely high quality beer.

Brewing Notes

Kit Weight: 1.0kg

Produces 40 pints / 23 litres

Ready in 3 weeks

Requires 1kg of Sugar. However, we recommend that you try using the Beerworks 1.2 ltr Liquid Malt Enhancer instead of sugar. This produces a far superior brew and is perfect for this type of kit. See the link below for details.

This is my first-time brewing Hambleton Bard and I chose to begin with their Strong Bitter (just started off a Lager Supreme to see how that compares). All the ingredients are dry except a small sachet of hop extract (which when compared to the Hambleton Bard Lager Supreme is a small sachet of very thick wort-like syrup).

After sterilising the fermenting bin in the usual way (OXI 4g per litre of water) and leaving it for 20 minutes plus, I added the dried malt extract powder (about a kilo) which is a beige colour to the fermenter (with hot water and after dissolving the 1.4kg of sugar) bit by bit (it is quite clumpy and so good to break these clumps with your hand (outside the bag not touching the dried malt extract) before putting in the fermenter.

It is important to stir vigorously to make sure that the dried malt extract dissolved properly. Once everything was dissolved, I added the hop extract. User tip: never dip a bit of this on your finger to taste – this is like a hop taste but 10 billion times stronger – not to be wholly recommended! Topped up the fermenter with cold water to 23 litres and then put some of the fully mixed wort into a sterilised glass and added the yeast and stirred to a creamy mixture and tipped back into the fermenter as per instructions. This should all be done at between 18 – 24 degrees and it was perfect at 22.7 degrees. Despite maintaining the temperature within the 18 - 24 degree range throughout, I didn't see the levels of vigorous fermentation that I have in other kit beers.

I bottled this beer and added about 190 grams of sugar for priming (5g per pint as recommended; they say anywhere between 4 -6 gms). Very significant amounts of yeast residue around the sides of the fermenter and on the bottom (though the airlock didn't really bubble on this beer that much as noted earlier). Lovely bitter, medium coppery brown colour and 100% clear after being in the bottle for 2 weeks or so.

This was about 5.7º alcohol. Has a reasonably good head and the taste is very, very bitter and super-dry. Pretty much drinkable though but may not do this one again though, as I live overseas, this kit is very light in weight compared to others and so easy to pack with no heavy liquid wort to carry around. As note earlier, I am doing a Lager Supreme now and will leave a review of that once it's ready to drink. (Posted on 22/02/2020)
