Immersion heater

This fits through a bung or grommet and drops into your wine. On the top you have a control which allows you to preset the temperature to what you want. It will then switch off when it reaches this temperature and then switch on when it drops again. If you want to ferment in a cold area and can't keep a temperature between 20-27°C this is a must. Supplied with a 180cm power cord, and fitted with a demijohn sized bored rubber bung.

Summary

Homebrew immersion heater for stable fermenting temperatures. Adjustable thermostat for accurate control of your brew. Suitable for all sizes of fermenting vessels up to 25 litres, and can be used in glass or plastic containers. Standard size rubber bung with airlock hole. 240 volts 100 watts.

The heater comes factory set to 24 deg C and can be adjusted by the user from 14-34 deg C. We recommend you leave this as this is a perfect setting for most fermentation's.

    Dimensions: Tube length 230mm

Supplied with a 180cm power cord, and fitted with a demijohn sized bored rubber bung.

    Checking the function

This Immersion Heater should be capable of heating the brew in a cold garage, but there are a few thoughts that come to mind if you are struggling to get this up to temperature.

    1. Volume – A 30-litre container may struggle a little at very low temperatures, especially if it’s on a solid concrete floor.  If this is the case, we would suggest insulating the bottom or raising it off the floor on some wooden slats.  Wrapping the fermenter in an insulating layer is also advisable, and will also save a little electricity.  Bubble wrap is good, but a blanket would do as well.

    2. Draft – A draft will cause a lot of cooling at low temperatures, even if it’s only a gentle one.  Insulating as above will help with this.

    3. Means of temperature measurement – The method used to measure the temperature will return vastly differing results.  The LCD strips that stick to the outside can be a long way out in cold ambient conditions for example.  If measured using a thermometer in the brew itself (which is the only accurate method really) this needs to be taken at about the midpoint of the heater immersion depth.  If the temperature is taken below the heater, the brew will be cooler, although convection currents do help distribute the heat. It will always be warmer towards the top, and cooler at the bottom.  In cold conditions, the heater needs to placed quite low in the container.

    4. A faulty heater – It is possible that the adjustment shaft has broken or the knob has come loose, and any adjustment of it is not turning the thermostat up inside.  This is not very likely but is a possibility.

    Notes:

    • As there may sometimes be long periods when the immersion heater is not used, the temperature control may become a little tight. It is perfectly ok to use a little force to adjust/turn the control

    • If you would like to purchase a bucket lid with a pre-drilled hole that fits this immersion heater, please see below.
