Summary

This Immersion Heater should be capable of heating the brew in a cold garage, but there are a few thoughts that come to mind if you are struggling to get this up to temperature.

    1. Volume – A 30-litre container may struggle a little at very low temperatures, especially if it’s on a solid concrete floor.  If this is the case, we would suggest insulating the bottom or raising it off the floor on some wooden slats.  Wrapping the fermenter in an insulating layer is also advisable, and will also save a little electricity.  Bubble wrap is good, but a blanket would do as well.
    2. Draft – A draft will cause a lot of cooling at low temperatures, even if it’s only a gentle one.  Insulating as above will help with this.
    3. Means of temperature measurement – The method used to measure the temperature will return vastly differing results.  The LCD strips that stick to the outside can be a long way out in cold ambient conditions for example.  If measured using a thermometer in the brew itself (which is the only accurate method really) this needs to be taken at about the midpoint of the heater immersion depth.  If the temperature is taken below the heater, the brew will be cooler, although convection currents do help distribute the heat. It will always be warmer towards the top, and cooler at the bottom.  In cold conditions, the heater needs to placed quite low in the container.
    4. A faulty heater – It is possible that the adjustment shaft has broken or the knob has come loose, and any adjustment of it is not turning the thermostat up inside.  This is not very likely but is a possibility.

    Notes:

    • As there may sometimes be long periods when the immersion heater is not used, the temperature control may become a little tight. It is perfectly ok to use a little force to adjust/turn the control
    • The Immersion heater can be fully immersed in the liquid.
