29 bottles of decent wine Review by jerry greenwich

I bought this kit for my first attempt at wine making and overall I can give very positive feedback, with a couple of provisos - see below

I bought this kit along with a 'luxury starter pack" from lovebrewing. the kit comes in a very good package. everything is nice and clean, properly packed. It is well worth watching the videos from the website. and there are quite a few entertaining videos of general wine making from kit on youtube.

The first step is to get everything sanitised. This is a trick you learn after a while. The sanitising agent is not in the wine kit, but it comes with the starter pack. Sanitising is a bit boring at first. But after a few sessions it becomes second nature and you wind up quite liking the feeling of having everything so clean.

Starting the primary fermentation is dead easy. Pour the juice. Add the water. measure the temperature (I didn't have any problem there). Measure the original gravity: this is my first proviso. The reading was something like 1080, which I only learned later means the end wine is probably in the region of 10 degrees. Has I known that, I would have added sugar to get to 12 or 13 degree potential alcohol. So this is my first proviso: consider adding sugar if you want something stronger than a light wine.

After a week, first 'racking' (syphoning) and degassing. This worked OK but it was a lot of work. I got a wine whip (degassing rod) from LB and spent a good 20 minutes degassing. And still in the end product there is still a bit of gas. I'll check what I can achieve with the next batch. But frankly I'm think of using a vacuum pump of something like that. There has to be a better way.

After 10 more days, final step: bottling (and drinking). I transferred the batch to a new carboy again. Then I set about to bottle. Gathering 30 bottles and removing the labels was fun. I tried various solutions for removing the bottles, but in the end the easiest solution is a large kitchen knife maintained v sharp using a whetstone. I tried soaking and various other suggestions, but this is easiest. with most modern labels, the glue is so strong you can never completely get it off, but that's OK. It gives a rugged look to the bottles. Sanitising the bottles was done by soaking the bottles in sanitiser twice. I did not have a bottler stick but it's still possible and OK with the syphon tube and the clip. For sanitising and bottling I use a 84L and a 35L plastic boxes from B&Q. They are large enough to put the easy-siphon etc.

I used the Ferrari corker and the premium corks. After adjusting the screw until the depth is correct, it was easy. Interestingly, screw cap bottles seem to work fine with the corking machine.

So I produced almost 29 bottles. One was a bit short but it got drunk pretty much then and then, which tells you all you need to know. we drink something like 4 bottles a week, so that's 7 weeks of supply.

With hindsight, I would say:
- if you try cabernet sauvignon, don't get the "premium" range, get the "superior". The names are confusing. Cabernet sauvignon is a fairly tart grape and it benefits from a bit of oak, which is only in superior. I bought the premium by accident whilst selecting the pack and I regret it.
- for red wines in kits, I would probably avoid 'tart' wines such as cabernet sauvignon or malbec. Go for round flavours.
- check the alcohol potential and get ready to boost it to 12 or 13. there are tables on the internet.

Having said all that, this is one of the most fun thing I have done in a while. I have already started a Mezza Luna white batch. And as soon as my bucket is free, I will do the Mezza Luna red. Then I will leave it for a few months. Making wine is like having a pet, but only for 4 weeks and you can drink it at the end.

This excludes the Isle of Wight, The Isles of Scilly, The Isle of Man, Northern Ireland, The Republic of Ireland and the Scottish Highlands. The Channel Islands and all other offshore destinations are also excluded from our free delivery offer. Orders to any of these excluded destinations will be quoted by our system, but may be subject to change at any time.

Scottish Highlands & Islands

Regrettably we are forced to pass on courier charges for some parts of Scotland and the Isles.

This is due to the way the couriers structure their networks and is unavoidable. Whilst larger retailers such as Amazon may offer flat rate shipping nationwide due to economies of scale, we are unable to do so.

We prefer to remain transparent with regards to shipping costs and endeavour to offer the best possible rates in these cases.

Dispatch & Next Day Services

Our aim is to send out the same day all orders received by 9am. Sometimes due to a heavy influx of orders (especially over weekends) we may need an extra day to do this. Orders will be dispatched such that you should receive them the next working day by courier (excluding Saturday and Sunday) or by 1st class post (this is not a guarantee, as no UK parcel carrier offers a 100% guarantee on their service). On the rare occasions where we may be let down, or if there is a problem with the order we will notify you.

Delivery Times

In most cases, Mainland UK delivery is by a 24 hour, next working day service on DPD or TNT. Orders to areas excluded from our free shipping offer may be on 48+ hour courier services due to logistical issues beyond our control. Small items are sent by Royal Mail 1st Class post untracked. These items are usually delivered within 24 hours, but this can vary (anywhere up to 10 working days), and is unfortunately beyond our control.
